Lewis Hamilton looks happy with his girlfriend

Lewis Hamilton spared no expense to have his family by his side for his attempt to win the Formula 1 world title today.

But his father Anthony, the person who masterminded his rise to the top, will not be among his guests.

Lewis, 25, has flown his mother, stepfather and pop-star girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger to Abu Dhabi for today’s final race of the season.

Meanwhile his estranged father Anthony will watch proceedings from a distance at the racetrack.


The pair are said to be barely on speaking terms after the star sacked Anthony, 53, as his manager just 12 days before the start of the F1 season in Bahrain in March.

Last night Lewis said: ‘He’s not really here with me. He’s just here doing business . . . I’m here doing my job. I’ve got my mum, stepdad and girlfriend with me.

‘Of course, it’s nice to have him here, but he’s not a guest of mine.’

Lewis has arranged for Nicole, his mother Carmen, 52, and her husband Raymond Lockhart to have total access to the McLaren team headquarters at a race that will provide a compelling climax to the closest championship in the 60-year history of F1.

But Lewis’s greatest fan will be at the less opulent end of the paddock with the Force India team – Anthony is the manager of the team’s ­Scottish test driver, Paul di Resta.

Until they fell out, Lewis and his father were inseparable and proud Anthony didn’t miss any of his races. He was also the first to congratulate him after he became world champion in Brazil in 2008.

Lewis’s parents split when he was just two and he grew up with his father, who did three jobs to pay for his son’s racing dream.

It was Anthony who persuaded McLaren team principal Ron Dennis to sign Lewis to the team in 1998 on a £5 million driver development contract. In 2007 he negotiated a new, five-year £75 million deal following Lewis’s astonishing debut.

But by the start of this year it was being claimed by insiders that Lewis had tired of his father’s attempts to control his life.

His romance with Nicole, 32, who found fame as lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, had stalled for six weeks at the beginning of the year.

But once his father had departed, the couple resumed their relationship.

Lewis begins today’s race 24 points behind the world championship leader, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.

He is also adrift of Red Bull rivals Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel.

Yet after qualifying on the front row of the grid, Lewis could still steal the title if all three fail to perform.
